Delaware Academy’s FFA chapter celebrated the 100th anniversary of the New York FFA organization during their annual convention, held this year at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse — the same location the first-ever FFA Convention was held in 1926. A century later, more than 3,400 FFA members, advisors and guests from across the state participated in the three-day convention, which provides an important opportunity for members to participate in workshops and tours, explore different fields in the agricultural industry and network with agricultural business professionals and colleges. Anna Clark and Marshall LaPierre, both Delaware Academy seniors, received their Empire Degree, the highest state level honor. Congratulations, Anna and Marshal– your hard work and dedication is inspiring!

Perry Ground, Haudenosaunee Storyteller, gave a storytelling presentation to elementary students Monday. Storytelling is an important part of traditional Haudenosaunee lifestyle, and the program Mr. Ground presented was filled with historical information, discussion about the art of storytelling, elements of Haudenosaunee culture and LOTS of humor. Perry Ground is a Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Nation and has been telling stories for more than 25 years as a way of educating people about the culture, beliefs and history of the Haudenosaunee (sometimes known as Iroquois) Confederacy. The DA PTA was awarded a Creative Learning grant from the Roxbury Arts Group, which helped to bring this presentation to our school. Our students were engaged and enthralled!

Drew Jacobs, Watershed Program Coordinator for Friends of the Upper Delaware (FUDR) visited Mr. Layman’s 8th Grade Science classes on Monday. Students learned about the different ways land can be used, and how those uses can affect both the land and water in the watersheds. FUDR has worked with a number of different grades and classes at Delaware Academy this year as part of its mission to engage and educate in the local communities along the upper Delaware River system.

This week, Delaware Academy is excited to be hosting 13 students and their advisors from Wittekind Gymnasium (School) in Lübbecke, Germany. The group is spending a week here, learning about our school, regional community and American culture. Last fall, DA German teacher Terrence Legg and School Counselor Matthew Albright took 11 Delaware Academy students to Germany, and this month’s visit completes the exchange. The German visitors are shown with their American hosts in front of the high school Thursday.
