Perry Ground, Haudenosaunee Storyteller, gave a storytelling presentation to elementary students Monday. Storytelling is an important part of traditional Haudenosaunee lifestyle, and the program Mr. Ground presented was filled with historical information, discussion about the art of storytelling, elements of Haudenosaunee culture and LOTS of humor. Perry Ground is a Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Nation and has been telling stories for more than 25 years as a way of educating people about the culture, beliefs and history of the Haudenosaunee (sometimes known as Iroquois) Confederacy. The DA PTA was awarded a Creative Learning grant from the Roxbury Arts Group, which helped to bring this presentation to our school. Our students were engaged and enthralled!

Drew Jacobs, Watershed Program Coordinator for Friends of the Upper Delaware (FUDR) visited Mr. Layman’s 8th Grade Science classes on Monday. Students learned about the different ways land can be used, and how those uses can affect both the land and water in the watersheds. FUDR has worked with a number of different grades and classes at Delaware Academy this year as part of its mission to engage and educate in the local communities along the upper Delaware River system.

This week, Delaware Academy is excited to be hosting 13 students and their advisors from Wittekind Gymnasium (School) in Lübbecke, Germany. The group is spending a week here, learning about our school, regional community and American culture. Last fall, DA German teacher Terrence Legg and School Counselor Matthew Albright took 11 Delaware Academy students to Germany, and this month’s visit completes the exchange. The German visitors are shown with their American hosts in front of the high school Thursday.

The month of April was Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and members of our S.A.D.D. chapter undertook a number of actions to bring awareness to the cause. They wore t-shirts saying “Educate. Empower, Prevent. Sexual Assault Awareness,” and handed out teal pins to all faculty and staff in the middle and high schools to wear on Wednesdays during the month, which brought awareness and sparked excellent questions and conversations. They hung up posters donated by the local Safe Against Violence organization, and flyers created by our S.A.D.D. student president Natalie Anderson which shared statistics, information about consent, and local and school resources to connect with support. Several S.A.D.D. members were also guests on the Wednesday morning announcements to share age-appropriate educational information. The month was a success, and the chapter looks forward to raising awareness again next year!

A group of juniors have announced the creation of the “D.A. Care Closet,” a new initiative that aims to help students who may lack basic essentials like hygiene items and clothing with the items they need to feel confident and supported. The Care Closet will be stocked with new items purchased for the closet, and the group is seeking donations from the community to help purchase them. You can learn more about contributing at ( https://tinyurl.com/DACareCloset ). The students were prompted to develop this service project through their participation in Catskill Area School Study Council conferences.
