2024 is off to a bang at DA Elementary! Students in Mrs. Reid-Jackson’s art classes have made their mark on the new year: PreK worked on mixed media fireworks and number recognition; fireworks were made with upcycled cut toilet paper rolls dipped in paint and stamped, then they got upcycled numbers from 3rd grade prints and a little glue and glitter to finish them off. Kindergarteners made oil pastel and tempera resist numbers (great practice writing their numbers and date). 3rd grade created positive and negative number prints using metallic tempera paint

Congratulations to members of Delaware Academy’s two Upstate Academic Competition Teams: Cooper Cohen, Rose McPheely, Erin Coppersmith, Sofia Olson, Kaylee Lewis, Seamus deMauro, Rocco Schnabel, Marshall LaPierre and Ben Hadley. The two teams competed recently in the game show-like contest, which is organized by the Catskill Regional Teachers Center and held at SUNY Oneonta. The two DA teams are advised by High School Guidance Counselor Alex Chase.

Our building & grounds team has been working all morning to keep the snow at bay. We sure do appreciate it!

Today we remember and honor the life and legacy of Dr. King.

Our 6th graders got something interesting in science class this week: fish eggs! “Trout in the Classroom” is a program of Trout Unlimited, and this week members of the group came and set up an aquarium in the science classroom and helped introduce trout eggs to it. Tom Trelease from Trout Unlimited is coordinating the Trout project for Delaware Academy, and leads this effort for all of the areas around the state. The organization provides everything the students need for the project. Students in Mrs. Tash’s classes will grow the trout in the classroom until June, when the 6th graders will release them in the Delaware River at the end of the school year.

Local school administrators and school literacy leaders attended a New York State Literacy Initiative event at locations across the state on Wednesday, January 10. Elementary School Principal Julie Mable attended the event at the DCMO BOCES Harrold Campus in Sidney Center, along with Elementary Academic Intervention Support for English Language Arts providers Dana DeBoer, Kierstin Griswold, and Mitzi McAteer. The event was sponsored by the New York State Education Department, which released a new series of literacy briefs focused on the science of reading. #NYSLiteracyInitiative

Wishing all of our Delaware Academy families and friends who are celebrating this week a very Merry Christmas!

Students in Mrs. Sherman’s Family and Consumer Science classes tried their hands at decorating sugar cookies with royal icing this week. Mmmmm!

Students in Mrs. Sherman’s 6th grade Family and Consumer Science class used their measuring and scissor skills to make tie blankets in class, just in time for winter break!

Our students have been busy little elves! Here are a few more holiday art projects: Tim Burton-inspired Holiday portraits (8th grade); Nutcrakers - oil pastels and tempera paint with patterned backgrounds done with tempera paint sticks (5th grade); and the 4th grade played Roll-an-Elf (annual fave), done with black sharpie and colored pencils and patterned backgrounds done with tempera paint sticks.

Students were serenaded with holiday music as they arrived this morning! Thanks to the (mostly) pajama-clad Delaware Academy ensemble of Mrs. Gibson, Ms. Lindner, Luke Pringle, Miss Collison, Victoria Verspoor and Mrs. Zimmerman for providing a cheery start to the day!

Thank you to all our talented students who performed in Tuesday's High School Winter Concert. It was amazing! Special thanks to our student conductor and soloists!
