Art

Community Action Service Art

The Community Action Service Art class is a new high school art class taught by Mrs. Reid-Jackson. They have undertaken a range of creative art projects with a focus on service, awareness and community engagement, including:

The Memory Project
The class completed portraits and identity portraits (mixed media artwork) for The Memory Project, working very hard over several months on this unique initiative. The Memory Project is a youth arts organization that promotes intercultural understanding and kindness between children around the world.  The Memory Project gets its name from its first intention, which was to provide handmade, heartfelt portraits as special memories to children in orphanages. Their intention has expanded to touching the lives of youth around the world facing many types of challenges. The Memory Project uses art to reach a distant destination: a kinder world in which all youth see themselves in one another regardless of differences in their appearance, culture, religion, or circumstances.

The photos show examples of the art that our students created for the project.

You can see a video of the children in India receiving their portraits and identity art that our CASA students worked on and contributed to here.

Smile Tiles
The clay tiles were made by middle school students last year, and this year CASA students glazed them. They were made available (for free) in the high school office to anyone who “needed a smile.”

Spring Musical

This year’s musical was a modern take on the familiar classic “The Wizard of Oz,” transforming the high school stage into the Land of Oz during early March. The talented cast and crew wowed the audience with the set, the music and the performances. Watch this spot next winter for information about next year’s production!
