DELAWARE COUNTY - The votes are in and according to reports from U.S. News, local districts have made the list of “Best High Schools.”

Delaware Academy (DA) is ranked #230, while Bainbridge- Guilford is #262, Deposit is #438, Margaretville #456, South Kortright #485, Unatego #529, Walton #584, Roscoe #664, Downsville #679, Livingston Manor #691, Franklin #696, Sidney #744, Hancock #747, and Afton, Charlotte Valley, Roxbury and Stamford are #904.

The rankings are established through a system which includes college readiness, graduation rate, math and reading proficiency, math and reading performance, underserved student performance and college curriculum breadth.

The administrators on the list couldn’t be more proud.

“We are all very pleased with our ranking as one of the best high schools in the United States. It’s an honor we all own a ‘piece of’ as a school district and as a community,” said DA Superintendent Jason Thomson. “I believe what makes us an exceptional school is our students, community, dedicated teachers and support staff. Everyone always goes above and beyond. All of our teachers and staff work extremely well together as one unified team. Currently, we have 770 students enrolled in K-12.”

Thomson added that it is imperative to provide an exceptional educational experience for all students.

“Simply due to the fact, you only have ‘one shot’ at providing a meaningful, positive educational experience and getting it right,” he said.

DA offers 117 different college credits (dual enrollment courses), eight different advanced placement (AP) programs, honors courses, as well as advanced math and sciences.

“We offer an advanced College Technical Education Program (CTEP) through a collaborative partnership with SUNY Delhi, FFA programming, school garden, our maple house, just to name a few,” said Thomson. “We have multiple mental health programs which include Alternative to Violence Programming (AVP), Olweus bullying prevention program, and “Sources of Strength.” Also, pending our 2019-2020 budget approval, we will be adding an additional school counselor.”

“We are thrilled at being recognized as one of the best high schools, although not surprised,” said Unatego Superintendent David Richards. “We have known for some time that we had a great school and having a great high school goes beyond just what is happening in grades 9-12 - it takes an entire district to have a great high school and we have a veteran staff and great kids who all work together to ensure that our students graduate college and are career-ready.”
