September 2022 Community Update

Dear Delaware Academy Families,

We have successfully completed the first week of school. Academics, athletics, and extra-curricular activities are  well underway. It’s been wonderful to have our Bulldog Family back and see classrooms full of happy faces. As we  continue to move forward, I’m writing with some important reminders and updates for our community:

1. Food Service Updates: This summer we were notified that the federal government is no longer funding free meals for  NYS schools as it did during the pandemic. While we have continued with our Free and Reduced Lunch program for  families who qualify, unfortunately, Delaware Academy does not qualify to receive free lunches for all. At present, we do  not meet the threshold set by NYS as a district that is majority economically disadvantaged. This has caused some  confusion for students in our first week of school who expected that meals were free for everyone. We understood this  confusion and did not deny a meal to anyone this week. Moving forward, we encourage all families, whether you believe  you may qualify or not, to complete the Free and Reduced Meal Application found on our website under the Dining  Department or by clicking here. Information on creating My School Bucks meal accounts can also be found there.

2. Code of Conduct: This year we are undertaking a review of our Code of Conduct. Concerns have been brought to our  attention, specifically surrounding the dress code. Concerns from a number of perspectives on this topic have been heard  and are being used to inform this conversation. Prior to any proposed revisions becoming codified, we must hold a public hearing to share proposed revisions, answer questions, and hear feedback for consideration. I will keep you informed as  our work progresses on this review.

3. School Safety & Emergency Response Team: This year we are also undertaking a review of our District Safety Plan.  We will be engaging our current Safety Committee, comprised of a variety of school and community stakeholders in this  important work. The resulting District Safety Plan will be shared with our community as well. We are also looking into  the feasibility of adding a School Resource Officer to our school. Our Board of Education will be continuing this  discussion at our next Board of Education meeting on Monday, September 26.

4. Construction Projects: This summer we completed paving and drainage on the driveway loops and side parking lot  of the high school. We have neared completion of the tennis courts, which will reopen for school and public use in early  October. We have also neared completion of the new Primary Playground (ages 2 – grade 2) behind the elementary  school, adjacent to the existing playground. Our next step is to replace the mulch at the existing playground.

I’m thrilled to witness progress on many fronts at Delaware Academy. Here is a brief listing of upcoming Events:

∙ Elementary Carnival – Friday, September 16
∙ Board of Education Meeting – Monday, September 26
∙ Middle and High School Open House – Thursday, September 29
∙ Elementary School Open House – October 6 (K-2), October 13 (UPK, Grades 3-5)

A hard copy of our District Calendar will be arriving to your mailbox in the near future to reference important dates for  the 2022-2023 school year. Be well and enjoy all the beauty that fall brings in our greater Delhi community.
