Students Visit State Capitol for School Based Health Care (SBHC) advocacy event News of Districtwide Interest
On February 9, 2016, nine students from Delaware Academy joined Mrs. McGrath (Social Studies Teacher) and Dawn Calkins ( LPN) for a School Based Health Care (SBHC) advocacy event. The group joined students from several other schools on a trip to the State Capitol in Albany. There was a large advocacy rally where students from all over New York State expressed their appreciation for the SBHC center in their schools. Several speakers presented information about the mission to increase funding for SBHC, and to “carve SBHC out” of the proposal to incorporate the benefits into the Medicaid billing system because this billing system would inhibit many students from receiving services.

Our group met with Senator John Bonacic, who graciously took this photo with us and sent each of us a copy of the photo. The Senator’s assistant took notes on all of our concerns for the SBHC. Later that day we arrived at the office of Assemblymember Claudia Tenney. Assemblymember Tenny’s assistant, Maria Kelso, met with our group for a conversation about SBHC. We had a lively exchange that the students enjoyed. In both meetings the Delaware Academy students spoke out for their DASH (SBHC) program. They were well informed and spoke eloquently. The trip had tremendous benefits, not only for the SBHC programs, but for the students as well. Contact with State Officials offers students an active participation in government experience. We would like to thank Deb Schlesinger for facilitating the SBHC Advocacy Day.
