Delaware Academy would like to welcome Mr. Karl O’Leary as the new Middle School/High School Principal. A Native of Port Jefferson, New York, Mr. O’Leary received his Bachelor of Science from SUNY Oneonta in English and Secondary Education and a Masters Degree from Stony Brook University in Liberal Studies. Mr. O’Leary is completing his Certificate of Advanced Study in School Building Leadership and School District Leadership through SUNY Cortland this Fall.

During the past fifteen years, Mr. O’Leary has taught various levels of English. His philosophy has been to allow students to experience learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom walls. Throughout his teaching, he has promoted student learning through poetry competitions, such as The Walt Whitman Birthplace Association, The Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center, The Dream Flag Project, as well as Binghamton University. Mr. O’Leary has also modeled through his own success, having published a collection of poetry Testimonial Tales and a children’s book A Good Day: “I wanted to show the students that I believe what I teach and that the meanings of words are powerful.”

Mr. O’Leary has also found success in coaching students in cross-country and track to state championships, as well as one All-American. Mr. O’Leary has also competed for Team USA Duathlon in the 2006 World Championships. After that, he was competitive in cycling and ultra-marathons, having set time-trial records and placed in fifty-mile and 100-mile events, respectfully. It is the well-rounded philosophy that Mr. O’Leary brings to Delaware Academy, “Our goal is to find a club, activity, or sport for each student.”

Most recently, Mr. O’Leary and his family, wife Melanie, sons Cameron (five) and Cooper (three), relocated back to Central New York as they found their college experiences to be impacting.

Mr. O’Leary is very enthusiastic about this new opportunity and looks forward to continue his growth with the Delaware Academy Community and build relationships: “I welcome the opportunity to speak with any person of the Delaware Academy Community, past and current, to continue our successes together.”
